The Year of the Bully…hopefully not!

How many of you have ever worked for a bully in the workplace and wondered how the company would keep this person at the expense of all the great contributors and collaborators that walked away?

img_7524Will 2016 be known as the Year of the Bully?  I certainly hope not.  The chief reason why bullies are as successful at harassing the weak is that too many of us are willing to stand by and watch or worst, pretend that we don’t see what is right before our eyes.  If we stand by and allow others to be sorely abused by bullies in the school yard, class room, corporate office, or on the world stage then we are no better than the bullies we let run rampart, unchecked, and without accountability.

Bullies can only thrive in a vacuum…a leadership vacuum.  Create an environment where everyone is included, valued, engaged, self-directed, and driving continuous improvement and a bully has no fertilizer from which to grow.

Where teaming and collaboration is highly prized and rewarded there is no kindling to support a bully’s fire.  Where emotional intelligence is regarded just…
